Historic Preservation: Baughman's Mill

Preservation work on Baughman's Mill, Stanford, Lincoln County

Baughman's Mill was built in 1884 with logs from Buffalo Mill, the first steam mill in the country.

Baughman's Mill is in downtown Stanford beside the renovated L & N Depot which was featured
in a recent post on my blog.  Both buildings are on the National Register of Historic Places.

Historic Preservation: Stanford's Depot

L & N Depot, Stanford, Lincoln County
The first depot was built in 1866 and replaced in 1911-12 by the present structure.  The depot served the railroad
until about 1987.  Recently restored, the depot now houses a museum.

Beside the depot, the site of the old railroad tracks is now part of a park
and walking trail.

The William Whitley House

The William Whitley House, Crab Orchard, Lincoln County

The Whitley House was also known as Sportsman's Hill.  Located on the property was a race track
that was supposedly the first in America where the horses raced counter clockwise, a deliberate
act of defiance of and independence from British racing tradition.

Notice the owner's initials built into the brick facade of the house.

The house and grounds will be open again soon for tours and special events.
