The Purple People Bridge

Purple People Bridge, Newport, Campbell County
Also known as the Newport Southbank Bridge, the Purple People Bridge was originally built as a
railroad bridge and first opened in 1872.  2,670 feet long and 17 feet wide, the bridge spans the
Ohio River and connects Third Street in Newport to Pete Rose Way in Cincinnati.  The bridge was
closed to traffic in 2001, but after a $4 million restoration it was re-opened as a pedestrian
walkway.  The structure is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
