Kentucky Vietnam Veterans Memorial Revisited

The website for this impressive memorial states: "Constructed in 1988 to overlook the state Capitol in Frankfort, the Kentucky Vietnam Veterans Memorial honors 1,109 Kentucky Veterans who served this nation during the Vietnam War. Each Veteran's name is precisely engraved on the blue-gray granite so the shadow of the sundial pointer touches their name on the anniversary of their death. Thus, each individual is honored with a personal tribute. The names of POW/MIA (Prisoners of War/Missing in Action) are engraved on the stone that is located behind (south of) the gnomon. In this location, the gnomon shadow will never fall on these names." Thoughtful and creative, this memorial is one of the most moving tributes I've seen.

Kentucky Vietnam Veterans Memorial, Frankfort, Franklin County

1103 Kentuckians fought and died during the Vietnam War, and all are honored at this memorial designed
 by Helm Roberts.  Roberts was a Lexington architect and a veteran himself.

The memorial is a giant sundial which contains all 1103 names of the Kentuckians
who died in Vietnam.  Each name is located so that the shadow of the sundial pointer
touches each veteran's name on the anniversary of his death.

The memorial is located on a hill above the Kentucky River and overlooks the State Capitol building
 and the city of Frankfort.
