Arrival of the Ladybugs

Ladybugs have been finding their way into my sunroom on the few warmer days we've had lately.
Lexington, Fayette County

I practiced using my macro lens while this one traveled up the window screen.

Goodbye to Turfland Mall

Turfland Mall, Harrodsburg Road, Lexington, Fayette County

Once the oldest enclosed shopping space in Lexington, Turfland Mall opened in 1967 and closed in 2008.

UK HealthCare will renovate the space that was once Dillard's department store and use it to
consolidate many of the UK health services that are currently scattered across the city.

The old mall structures between Dillard's and Home Depot will be razed.

Historic Preservation: Baughman's Mill

Preservation work on Baughman's Mill, Stanford, Lincoln County

Baughman's Mill was built in 1884 with logs from Buffalo Mill, the first steam mill in the country.

Baughman's Mill is in downtown Stanford beside the renovated L & N Depot which was featured
in a recent post on my blog.  Both buildings are on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Kentucky Children's Garden

The Kentucky Children's Garden at the Arboretum, Kentucky State Botanical Garden, Lexington, Fayette County

One of the first things you'll see upon entering the children's garden is this colorful horse and this painted metal screen.

Detail of metal screen shown in the previous photo

Also near the entrance is a very cool butterfly-shaped butterfly garden.

Several sections of the pathway throughout the garden are imprinted with leaves, plants, and other natural materials.

Even footprints!

When I visited the garden last week, it was full of children, caregivers, and teachers enjoying the many
learning and activity centers available.

This mosaic was one of my favorite finds.  Can you tell what materials were used to create this?

Detail of the recycled bottle caps and jar lids used in the mosaic above

Not yet completed or open to the public is this amazing outdoor railroad.

I can't wait to visit again!
