Things Change Yet Remain the Same in Middlesboro

The site of the old Lincoln High School on Ashbury Avenue is now a community park.  From 1910-1965, Lincoln High School is where African American students were educated in Middlesboro.

This little house on the east end of Dorchester Avenue looks much the same as it did when several of us went to Miss Margaret's for pre-school.  What a sweet lady she was!

Now just a large, empty field on 30th Street, this was once where Little League baseball was played.  The concrete in this photo was then occupied by the concession stand and entrance to the bleachers.

Formerly Frog's 7-11 on Dorchester Avenue

Hometown Market on Winchester Avenue was once Engle's Market.

Midnite Market is still in operation on Winchester Avenue.

Home of the wonderful, talented Matthews family, this house has been renovated but is still very recognizable.  Many of us were lucky enough to have learned to play the piano in the room behind the downstairs window on the left.

  1. I remember when Lincoln school was still standing, and the old high school before it was city hall. I went to the junior high and ate lunch at Lee's Drugstore. I was very young when Cumberland Hotel was still standing. And I grew up in the Matthews home. Love that place; so many wonderful memories; so glad it still stands.

  7. Thanks for checking out my blog, scoop716! I don't have the specific information you requested, but here's a site that may be helpful: http://www.middlesboroughhistory.com/. There are tons of old photos on this site including scanned copies of many yearbooks. The Bell County Historical Society may be able to help you, too. They have a website with contact information, and I would think they have information about the old Lincoln School. Good luck!
